In February, members of Sparks+Partners took part in a 3-hour CPD tour of the GWA Group Limited‘s extensive Caroma Innovation and Design Centre in Prestons, south-west Sydney. The visit offered a behind-the-scenes look at the latest research, production processes, and compliance testing that drive Caroma’s innovative approach to hydraulic services and plumbing solutions.
A Deep Dive into Production and Compliance
During the tour, attendees were introduced to Caroma’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, where rigorous testing ensures that all products meet the highest standards of durability and compliance. The production process was also showcased, emphasising the importance of prototyping in fixture development. Attendees observed how materials, shapes, and manufacturing techniques play a critical role in achieving both aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency.
A key highlight was the Hydraulic Tower, an essential component of Caroma’s research and development efforts. The tower, originally designed by industry leading hydraulic engineer Peter Donnelly—founder of Niven Donnelly & Partners and formerly of Sparks+Partners—for GWA in 2020, features transparent pipework that allows for visual observation of waste water behaviour in sanitary systems. This unique feature enables professionals to analyse and troubleshoot common issues related to venting, pipe sizing, grading, and stack connections, fostering improved plumbing designs.
The Hydraulic Tower and Its Impact on Industry Standards
One of the most significant contributions of the Hydraulic Tower is its role in shaping industry standards. The visual analysis provided by the tower led to a crucial update in plumbing regulations—such as the 15-degree junction requirement in AS3500.2-2021. This change was introduced to prevent partial backwash, which had been observed in systems without the requirement. The ability to test and visualise real-time wastewater flow dynamics has been instrumental in refining industry best practices.
