Visions for the new Sydney Olympic Park metro station and surrounding precinct have been unveiled, with the development proposed to “boost passenger movements and vibrancy” at the entertainment site.
The metro station, surrounding public domain and the adjacent developments intend to deliver a more connected Sydney Olympic Park.
Freshly unveiled plans for the Sydney Olympic Park Metro West station, designed by Architectus, will see the construction of four train platforms, wider walkways, open spaces and additional escalators to assist with managing the flow of large passenger crowds.
According to a media communique from the New South Wales government, this entails “25,000 passengers per hour, building on the 40,000 per hour capacity through the existing Olympic Park heavy rail station immediately to the North.”
In a response to Sydney Olympic Park being the hosting grounds for major sports events and concerts, the envisioned station platforms are organised in a side-island-side configuration, allowing the station to use the outer platforms and switch into “event mode,” the government has said.
Minister for Transport John Graham commented, “On those magic Sydney nights where the stadium and the arenas are sold out, fans will have peace of mind that Metro West will get them home with ease.
“The metro precinct will mean fans will want to stick around after the match, rather than rushing for the gates before full time.”
An integrated development will see the station itself enclosed by a new precinct, introducing space for retail and commercial use. As part of the precinct, builder FCC Construction Australia and developer Ecove Group will also deliver around 500 new apartments in two neighbouring residential towers climbing 42 and 32 storeys.
The proposed interior of the Sydney Olympic Park Integrated Station Development Precinct is intended to “reflect the site’s history and culture, with materials and lighting inspired by the Olympic cauldron and nearby mangrove landscapes.”
The final proposal will be subject to a detailed state significant development application, permitting community feedback thereafter.
With construction of the station expected to commence mid-2027, opening for the Metro West project is expected for 2032.
