GWS GIANTS’ training and community centre at Sydney Olympic Park is transforming into a Centre of Excellence (COE), bolstered by a NSW Government grant. The new COE provides facilities for the GIANTS’ AFL, AFLW, and netball teams and a home ground for the club’s AFLW team.
The Government funding supports the installation of new lighting, a scoreboard, oval fencing, and a swimming pool complex, along with the club’s plans for offices, high-performance spaces for AFL and AFLW, an indoor training field, an expansive gym and a full-size AFL field.
The GIANTS’ new home is due to be renamed the VALO Community Centre after signing VAILO as a major partner to develop the centre further. VAILO is an Australian advanced technology company with its core in ultra-high-performance and stadium LED lighting.
Sparks+Partners unearthed numerous obstacles working with the club’s brownfield site, abundant with pre-existing underground utilities left untouched since the rush of the 2000 Sydney Olympics construction. Coordinating ceiling-level services in a contemporary, unceiled structure posed a noteworthy challenge, requiring meticulous planning and execution.
Bonus win: A notable highlight for our team member, Adam, was the realisation of a childhood dream to work with his football team!
The GWS GIANTS’ will run community programs from the centre using sport as a connector to make measurable change and tackle key social issues aligned with the pillars of the GIANTS’ community agenda.
